IVF & Kinesisk Medicin

There are many different ways to get to one goal. Both Chinese and Western Medicines have accomplished great feats over the last century, treating numerous diseases, saving thousands of lives, and improving the quality of life for countless others. Using the best of both worlds, it is my experience that it is possible to increase the success rate of in vitro fertilization- IVF significantly.

A large number of patients who have tried IVF several times and were unsuccessful have soon become pregnant after Chinese Medicine treatments. In clinical observation, the ultrasound shows that, after acupuncture, the colour of women's ovaries change from cloudy to bright and clear. The follicles usually double in number, the lining of the uterus becomes thicker, and the number of embryos increases significantly. Patients experience less side effects from the Western drugs and feel more at ease and happy. For male patients, it is my experience that the semen quality significantly improves and the sperm number greatly increases. In short, Chinese Medicine can help to improve the success rate of IVF in a number of ways:

Research on Acupunture & IVF

A German study found that using acupuncture with IVF achieved a 42% clinical preganacy rate in the test group, compared to 26% in the control group that did not recieve acupuncture. This study involved giving acupuncture for just one day, shortly before and after the transfer of embryos. My clinical experience is that this rate increases to at least 60% with broader support of both Chineses herbs and acupuncture in preparation for and support throughout the IVF procedure. As well, both these modalities can significantly reduce the risk of miscarriage by supporting the female during her pregnancy.

Case History

Marie, was 35 years old, had taken the contraceptive pill since the age of 18 and came off the pill five years ago when she was going to start trying for a family. Unfortunately, she stopped menstruating altogether with raised FSH. She was diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Faliure (POF) and went on HRT. She had two cycles of ovulation induction and achieved one pregnancy, but miscarried at 6 weeks. She visited me two weeks after her miscarriage whereas her Human Choronic Gonadotropin (HCG) level was still high (300) and her lower abdomominal area was painful and hard to touch. She was extremely stressed and anxious, had difficulty in sleeping, always suffered cold hands and feet with frequent urination.

She had been a vegetarian for years, along with excessive exercise and was always under-weight.

The TCM treatment was designed firstly to invigorate the blood, transform stasis and soothe the liver qi, therefore improve pelvic blood flow. Then to tonify the qi and blood, nourish kidney yin (essence) as well as strengthen spleen and kidney yang.

The treatment protocol was firstly:

ST 26, REN 2, ST 29, LI 4, SP 10, SP 8, SP 6, LIV 3

Herbal Fomula:
Drive out stasis from the mansion of Blood decoction

Xia Yao Wan
Followed by YINTANG, REN 3, REN 6, PC 3, LI 4, ST 36, SP 6, KI 3

Gui Pi Wan/ Tiao Jing Bu Xue and Zuo Gui Wan

I advised her not trying to conceive for three months, allowing time to prepare her body for conception. Five months later she conceived and carried a baby to term. She came back to me again when the baby girl was one year old, had some more acupuncture treatments prior to IVF and achieved another pregnancy with twins.
